Why is my dog chewing up their bed, and how do I stop it?

If you're a pet parent, you've likely been faced with the daunting question of how to stop your dog from destroying their bed. After spending hundreds of dollars on bed after bed, many give up and resort to using blankets or towels to solve the problem. However, giving up on this issue can have a negative impact on your dog's health. Just like humans, dogs have support needs, especially if they're dealing with joint problems or arthritis (which according to the APPA, 90% of them will). So, it's crucial to find a solution.

Is it normal?

While there isn't a magic solution to the problem, there are ways to discourage destructive behavior. For instance, puppies often exhibit this behavior as they're still exploring and learning. Correct their behavior, but cut them some slack as they grow out of this phase.

Is it anxiety?

The main cause of destructive behavior is separation anxiety. If you suspect your dog is exhibiting destructive behavior due to anxiety, it's essential to address this root cause and find soothing alternatives to make their life better. Consult with your veterinarian for advice on how to solve this problem.

Are they understimulated?

Another major cause of dog bed chewing is boredom. Make sure your dog is entertained with plenty of toys to play with while you're away.

What to do?

Many experts believe that leaving your dog utterly exhausted can solve the majority of chewing issues. Play a rigorous game of fetch with a Frisbee before you leave the house or take the long way home on your morning walk to ensure your dog's mind and body are thoroughly exercised enough to rest through the day.

Lastly, consider investing in an indestructible dog bed. While no dog bed is truly chew-proof or indestructible, a bed like our Tough Buddy Titan dog bed uses a 1680 denier ballistic nylon fabric invented during WW2 for flack jackets, providing maximum durability. We also use Kevlar thread to sew all the seams together, providing a minimum of 5 times the seam strength found in other dog beds. These beds also feature hidden openings and are engineered to be as strong as possible.

With the right combination of solutions, your dog can have a bed without worry. This is especially important for older dogs who require support and may not be able to get it due to anxiety or boredom. While a chew-resistant dog bed is not the only solution, it's a great place to start and should definitely be a part of your solution.
