There is no legal or technical definition of “orthopedic” when it comes to dog beds. Wikipedia defines an orthopedic mattress as one “designed to support the joints, back, and overall body”. So if we go by the definition, to qualify as a truly orthopedic dog bed it would have to at the minimum support the “joints, back and overall body”. So basically it’s saying supportive bed. Then we can get into detail about what is "support".Perhaps we can look at the origin of the word on our quest for enlightnment.

Lets establish once and for all, a criteria for a truly orthopedic dog bed.
Based on the origin of the word (orthopædics- correct/straight), the definition of the word (designed to support), and the perceived intention of the term (provides relief).
A supportive memory foam dog bed uses real visco elastic memory foam to conform to your animal’s body and redistribute their weight evenly across the bed. A dog bed needs to be the following to be termed a real orthopedic dog bed.
Memory foam alone does not work as your animal will sink too far in and negate the pressure relief. To achieve the best pressure relief you must have visco-elastic foam bonded to supporting foam.

Chinese manufacturers will often add clay fillers to their memory foam that cause it to break down quicker, forming depressions.
